VHS to DVD

My mother mentioned that a friend of hers bought a machine that has both VHS and DVD capability.  Better still, she tells me that this machine is supposed to convert VHS to DVD.  I have never seen a piece of equipment built for that.  Looks like I will be Googling around trying to find this magical piece of equipment so I can convert all my old VHS tapes and then toss them.
