Toshiba and Western Digital have announced a temporary shutdown of Thailand factories.

Toshiba has reported water is 2 meters deep in its storage device plant and 3 meters deep in its semiconductor factory in Thailand.

IHS iSuppli said the flooding could potentially affect notebook production in early 2012.

Two industry research firms, IHS iSuppli and IDC, have predicted that the overall market shortage due to factory flooding in Thailand will reach 25% to 28% over the next six months.

"We generally believe the HDD industry will find way to return to pre-flood production levels by March, but by that point HDD supplies will be at extremely low levels," Rydning said. "It's still going to be a pretty painful period from December through February for most HDD customers."

At the moment the only pad that will work with Dragon medical 10 is a pad that runs on a Windows platform. HP makes the slate which runs on Windows platform but the processing power of the slate is inadequate to the task of running Dragon medical 10 because the slate currently runs on QUALCOMM snapdragon APQ8060 1.2 GHz processor.

The minimum specifications for Dragon medical 10 is an Intel Pentium 4 or later or AMD Athlon 64 or later. The faster the processor the faster the performance. You need at least 512 MB RAM; one gig of RAM for Windows Vista, and at least two gigs RAM for Windows 7 32 -- bit and 64 -- bit. The RAM on the slate is 1 GB. HP will be coming out with a new slate and if they can boost RAM capabilities then it will be a nice machine to use with Dragon medical 10, especially if they can keep the costs down.

Motion computing has a couple different products that can be used with Dragon medical; the CL 900 tablet, J3500 tablet, C5v tablet, and the F5V tablet. Would be prepared to spend more for these devices than you would for the devices listed earlier. If you're prepared to wait until some of the other tablet manufacturers catch up then do so, but if you're not, and you want to simplify your notetaking and dictation, especially in a medical environment buy a Motion Computing tablet and Dragon medical to test.

My name is Dylan Pattyn. I am a 26 year old resident of Montreal and a 7 year BlackBerry user.

I have been a loyal and substantially devoted client for a long time. I am however at this point moving on. Unfortunately this last year has been an extremely horrific one for myself personally as I've had to bring my Curve 3G in for repairs several times, had to deal with TELUS (which is by far no treat) and a host of other unfortunate incidents with your last two OS systems that have sent me to the crackberry forums more often than ever before.

I don't know why you did what you did. Perhaps you rushed certain products out? Maybe you tried to compete with brands who have no business in your market? I can't answer for you. It doesn't matter to me personally as I have no personal stake in your organization. Nor do I possess any insight into the corporate culture of RIM. What I do know is that I'm done. It's been heartbreaking for me to say the least.

I will always recall with fondness; the sidewheel, ball and eventually trackpad evolution as it's been fun. Before the past year or so your devices have always proven to be secure, durable and well designed. The individuals I have worked with on a professional level (I resell BES licensing as part of my career) have been fantastic and always reinforced my devotion, especially when the iPhone, Droid or Windows phones came along. And of course you're Canadian which makes this letter even harder to write as your organization has been a feather in our national cap for quite some time.

In any event. I hope whatever you folks decide to do with the company works out best for everyone. Whether you become a subsidiary of Microsoft, a platform enhancement for Apple or a division of Nokia or Sony. I wish you all the best. My days of supporting and evangelizing your product against the competition are over.

I despise headsets, or at least used to. I always found the quality of the conversation not quite the same as with a handheld- static, echos, noise pollution, etc- yet on the other hand, they were always convenient.

Now Jabra has a product which seems to solve issues of quality and adds the additional benefit of being wireless. This feature has uncoupled me from respecting the length of whatever wires were chaining me to my office phone; now I get to roam freely, limited only by the 120M range of the wireless device.

After a few more weeks of testing, maybe I will now at least "like" headsets :)

How often do you back up your personal data at home? In the world of professional IT this is a fundamental which causes tremendous grief when overlooked. It always seems that disaster strikes when we miss performing this critical function. What's even more troubling is that as IT professionals, as soon as we walk through the doors at home, we do not apply the same principles in our personal life, which left me wondering what is going on in the lives of ordinary citizens the world over who are entrusting more of their data to the digital age.

Many years ago, when I went to the PC builder to buy a whitebox solution, he had asked me how much memory I thought I would need, to which my answer was the most available, roughly twenty gigabytes. This reminds me of the old Bill Gates quote, "640K ought to be enough for anybody," because the system builder mentioned, "20 gigabytes? That's too big a hard drive!" That was 1998 when 20 gigabytes seemed like overkill. We no longer speak of gigabytes with the same awe, now it is terabytes and petabytes.
Now we are on the cusp of a revolution in digital technology! Where we once had hard copy CD's, DVD's, photos, books and documents, we are now moving to delivery and storage of these same items digitally. The time is fast approaching where if a brick and mortar record store exists, it will exist for one of two reasons: A) to sell antiques; or more likely B) to download content. What is even more likely, is that we will simply download the content from the comfort of our homes.
This brings up a few issues. Old media such as CD's, VHS tapes, and DVD's will eventually either need to be converted to digital or be reacquired in a digital format. The other issue is that digital productions are not absolute. At some point backing up and storing our digital content securely from our homes will be a driving concern for us ordinary folks.
With old media, we rarely ever made copies because we never expected the house to burn down, if it did, it hurt to lose a collection lovingly established and enjoyed over the years, but that was just bad luck. Now, we have hard drive failures which is a lot more common than a burning house.
When it comes to the new age of digital content, we have our main source of storage, and some smart people keep a secondary source such as an external hard drive to mitigate against a drive failure. We may not have a completely up to date backup on the external equipment but at least we do not lose everything.
This still leaves the problem of disaster. In the case of a disaster, your digital data is at a high risk. Your now terabytes of data which you may have spent thousands of dollars on can be lost in the blink of an eye. My suggested solution is to look towards a cloud (online) backup solution for anything critical. This solves two issues, backup and disaster recovery. It does so, by backing up to a location not anywhere near your immediate vicinity. If you have a disaster at home, once you are able to log into a computer anywhere, you can retrieve your information, which means your music, movie, photos, and literature libraries are safe.
There are a few companies leading the way in online backup platforms, such as iBackUp. Do yourself the favor and make sure you backup. If you do backup, start to consider a disaster recovery solution appropriate to your means and your budget. If you can afford to, make your backup solution your disaster recovery solution.

Back to School with Meraki

We were excited that Alvin Independent School District in Brazoria County, Texas, selected Meraki to serve its 17,000 students and 2,000 staff members. The district's ongoing 1:1 project for junior high means that every sixth, seventh, and eighth grade student has a handheld computing device in the classroom. Replacing the paper and pencil model, students at Alvin ISD read, write, solve problems, and get feedback from teachers through these devices.

This summer the district upgraded its technology to offer every junior high student an HP Netbook—an exciting initiative that also required an upgrade to a more robust, reliable wireless network. With a few student helpers, the Alvin ISD network team successfully deployed nearly 600 Meraki MR14 APs across 20 campuses before school started.

OK, so it was an exciting week at PC Mall for me. I love these new services we offer, they almost round out our product offerings perfectly. All week long I have been having conversations about our remote and onsite network management capabilities, our data center hosting, penetration testing, and disaster recovery solutions.

I still fit the usual chatter about desktops, laptops, printers, rackmount servers, blade servers, NAS and SAN storage solutions into the week, but the new titles definitely caught my attention.

The one piece still not 100% there is a co/lo facility. A lot of my customers are now looking towards a colocation facility to meet their DR needs. They need a secure trusted site, run by people of the highest integrity to locate their second set of servers and storage for disaster recovery purposes. Until we offer a true co-location option, I am going to recommend Liquid Web with secure facilities as an ideal company to host their equipment.

PEN Testing

It always surprises me when very smart people, who can configure complicated networks, refuse to test that network against threats from attacks within and outside of the organization.

They will throw up the Cisco, Sonicwall, Watchguard or Barracuda firewall to protect their general networks- servers, storage, switches. Then they will add more granular protection, end point protection such as Symantec Total Protection, CA, Trend Micro, McAfee, Kaspersky, AVG, Eset...there is a plethora of chocies when it somes to end point protection.

Each one, of course, will tell you that they are: the best in class, best of breed, the smartest, the fastest, real time, heuristic, reputation based, zero day protection, total protection, extreme defence, 98%, 99%, 100% effective against any and all attacks- anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-malware, anti-trojan, anti-webbot, browser hijacker, anti-DOS attacks...just the safest thing since chastity was under attack.

What boggles my mind is that so many IT Professionals believe what they are told by these security companies and never actually hire someone to actually check their network security. When they get a virus, or are attacked, they are shocked! Shocked that someone could actually outsmart their maginot line of tech products to guard against this very thing.

Case in point, Facebook, and Twitter. These are smart people with deep pockets and yet the only time they seem to realize their networks are vulnerable is when they go down after an attack.

As an IT solutions and services specialist, I suggest yearly penetration tests (PEN Tests) at a bare minimum, though monthly or bi-monthly would be my recommendation. And not a test where your internal resources who would hesitate to embarass you by pointing out a whole in your defence for fear of being fired, but use an outside IT company such as Sarcom to do the testing both inside and outside of your walls.

Start with the outside, tell them only what they need to know to identify that it will be your network they are testing and let them see where, if any, vulnerabilities exist. This "Black" PEN testing will give you a real world hacker eyeview of where you may have areas in your networks that can be exploited.

Have a second firm test inside of your walls, maybe Ligatt Security or some other testing firm. Let them know how many ports and see if an internal disgruntled employee can wreak havoc from within.

Be smart and protect yourself. A lot of money is spent to make you think your network is safe, why not put it to the test to prove that it is safe?

Dell vs. HP

This is a question I struggle with whenever a customer asks me for a recommendation on what PC to use in their environment. The answer is never a clear cut decision until a few questions are asked to clear up concerns on 4 things; pricing, availability, reliability, and customer service. It is a difficult thing to explain, and have someone understand, that all 4 of those concerns are singular and completely interconnected at the same time.

Here is what I have found in my experiences.

When it comes to price, Dell generally costs less. They buy strategically different than HP, and they build their machines differently than HP. For one, Dell, with few exceptions, custom builds all of their machines. They have the orders in hand and are 90% guaranteed their money before a machine ever ships, especially on the lucrative consumer side where margins are especially healthy.

HP on the other hand pre-builds a lot of their units and must count on smart, intuitive marketing to make their money back. This also means HP has additional costs that Dell does not have to endure such as massive inventory.

On the flip side this puts availability squarely in favor of HP’s corner. Most HP models can be ordered today and delivered tomorrow whereas Dell has a standard 7-10 day build time. Heaven help us if a part for the build is not available, then the lead time is pushed out to who knows when. Dell does not offer absolutes on their deliveries, only estimates. If you have a project where you absolutely need machines to be at a certain location by a certain date, HP is a better bet than Dell.

Dell also tends not to standardize the parts inside all of their machines. This means that if you take 100 Dell Optiplex 960’s (or any other model) with the same configuration, open them up, you will find that the 1gb RAM stick in each might be from different manufacturers, the power supply in each may be from different manufacturers, the hard drives, etc same thing.

HP does standardize the parts within a series or model. Take 100 NV516UT and you will find consistency and uniformity throughout the build. The RAM will be the same, the hard drives, the DVDRW, the power supply, etc. HP also has a larger depth and breadth to their portfolio of HP branded products so if you need to equip your office with and HP desktop, attached to an HP switch, connected to an HP server, hooked into HP storage…No Problem! If you need the printer, the keyboard, the mouse, the scanner, the fax, the UPS, the external HD, etc, HP can do all of that.

This is important depending upon what level of standardization you are looking for in a machine for your environment. If it is not important or moderately important, the Dell will just fine. If it is very or extremely important, the HP is a better bet.

Why? The answer is that each manufacturer of the various components in a machine, will QC to different standards. A stick of RAM from Kingston will undergo different testing than a stick from Edge, or Axiom, or Crucial. A hard drive from Seagate will be different from the same form, fit function drive from Axiom, Fujitsu, Fantom Drives, Western Digital, etc.

When it comes to customer service, this is a lot like the reliability question…it is a matter of taste. Both companies have their strengths and weaknesses. Dell gives an excellent up front warranty with their builds and the ease of deploying that warranty is amazing. If you have the service tag (serial number) for the machine and you are the authorized buyer, Dell can help with just about any problem affecting that machine.

HP has a mediocre warranty up front but additional levels of support are fairly inexpensive to add on. Calling 1-800-HP-INVENT can sometimes be trying but generally runs fairly smooth. Where HP really excels is in their onsite support, especially for server and storage products.

So at the end of the day, there is no real winner and my struggles continue. I just need to listen to what is important to you and then decide if Dell or HP will best meet your needs. Maybe I will decide that Lenovo or Acer will be a better fit than either. What my customers are certain of, is that the IT Info Guy will find a suitable solution for them.

WED, OCTOBER 28, 2009 — CSO — The worst economic recession in decades has compelled more companies to spend less on outsourced security services and do more in-house, according to the seventh-annual Global Information Security survey, which CSO and CIO magazines conducted with PricewaterhouseCoopers earlier this year.

Some 7,200 business and technology executives worldwide responded from a variety of industries, including government, health care, financial services and retail.

A few years ago, technology analysts were predicting unlimited growth for managed security service providers (MSSPs). Many companies then viewed security as a foreign concept, but laws such asSarbanes-Oxley, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (affecting financial services) were forcing them to address intrusion defense, patch management, encryption and log management. Convinced they couldn't do it on their own, companies chose outsourcers to do it for them. Gartner estimated the MSSP market in North America alone would reach $900 million in 2004 and that it would grow another 18 percent by 2008."
